Grants for Women: School Grants and Federal Grants

The United States Government laid out more than 900 types of federal grants to date. Some of these
grants are designed to help women by providing them with opportunities not only to return to school
but also to get a higher education, a professional career, and for them to start their own business to
gain their own profit and income. Some of these grants for women focus on single parents, abused,
and battered women as well as homeless women. There are three major types of grants that are
available for women aside from federal grants, private grants, corporate grants, and professional
grants.

Federal Grants

Federal grants are not limited to school or education scholarships and grants. There are many agencies
under a country’s government which provide grant money to public organizations for the sole purpose
of improving the status of women in different fields of industry such as the business field, the arts,
and the science and technology field. Education grants offer opportunities for women to return to
school by providing the money which they need to pay for school expenses such as tuition fees, books,
housing, room and boarding, and other miscellaneous school fees.

There are many grants that the United States Federal Government provide not only to U.S. citizens,
but also to women around the world. Some of these grant opportunities are offered by the Office of
Public Health and Science, the United States Agency for International Development, the Employment
and Training Administration, the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, the Small Business
Administration, the Administration on Aging, and the National Institutes of Health.

School Grants

Everyone knows how expensive it is to get an education. School expenses are not limited to tuition
fees. There are other fees that a student needs to worry about such as payments for books, room and
board fees as well as other miscellaneous fees associated with education. However, women who would
like to obtain an education will be relieved to find out that there are many school grants which cater
and are mostly available for women. School grants are not only provided by the federal government.
These scholarships and grant money are also being offered by a lot of non-profit organizations,
companies, and even private individuals.

School grants are different from school loans since grants do not require the person applying for it
to pay it back. As long as the qualified applicant will use the money solely for educational purposes,
she will be able to remain in school and get the education that she was never able to achieve in the
past due to financial constraints and problems. Grants are established at different costs for different
purposes and all of these financial aid programs require certain qualifications which need to be met.
A grant may be provided depending on the curriculum or degree an applicant is hoping to obtain, or it
may also be offered depending on the sports activity which an applicant excels in.

The American Association of University Women

The American Association of University Women, also known as AAUW, is dedicated to help enrich
the lives of women all over the world. This organization helps women by offering grants in order for
them to achieve graduate degrees and assist women in making a difference not only in their own lives,
but to their communities as well. The AAUW offers grants as well as fellowships through several ways
such as the Selected Professions Fellowships, Community Action Grants, Career Development Grants,
International Fellowships, and through the American Fellowships.

The Selected Professions Fellowships is designed to assist women in obtaining a certain degree that
they never were able to attain in the past. The Community Action Grants are provided to non-profit
organizations, non-degree research projects, and to individuals who aim to promote education
and equality. Career Development Grants provide assistance to those women who yearn for career
advancement, women who want to be part of the workforce again, and to women who have burning
desires to change their chosen career. However, this type of grant requires an applicant to have a
bachelor’s degree. The International Fellowships offer grant money for women who would want to
study in the United States but are not U.S. residents or citizens. The focus of American Fellowships is to
help women who are undergoing post doctoral research and doctoral candidates in their educational
and financial needs.

The Jeanette Rankin Foundation for Low Income Women

The Jeanette Rankin Foundation for Low Income Women (JRF) has played a major role in helping enrich
women’s lives. The grants for women that the Jeanette Rankin Foundation is offering provides many
opportunities for women to get a higher education, go to college, secure a job after graduation, and to
ultimately rise from poverty through acquiring high-quality education. These grants help women who
have low income resources in paying for the expenses associated with education. The main principle
that the JRF believes in is that education needs not be stopped regardless of age and economic status.
Education is continuous and is essential for personal and career growth of women.

To be a potential candidate for the grants being offered by the Jeanette Rankin Foundation, applicants
should be 35 and above, a US citizen, and should be enrolled in an accredited school. She should also be
enrolled in either a vocational or a technical education with the focus of obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
Applicants should demonstrate limited or low income resource as a requirement in order to qualify for
the foundation’s grant.
